In a way, we think that water is the opposite of air, but the common lake or stream does contain small amounts of oxygen, in the form of dissolved oxygen. Although the amount of dissolved oxygen is small, up to about ten molecules of oxygen per million of water, it is a crucial component of natural water bodies; the presence of a sufficient concentration of dissolved oxygen is critical to maintaining the aquatic life and aesthetic quality of streams and lakes.

Certain environmental stresses (hot summer temperatures) and other human-induced factors (introduction of excess fertilizers to a water body) can lessen the amount of dissolved oxygen in a water body, resulting in stresses on the local aquatic life. One water analysis that is utilized in order to better understand the effect of bacteria and other microorganisms on the amount of oxygen they consume as they decompose organic matter under aerobic (oxygen is present) is the measure of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).

How does BOD affect wastewater, and wastewater treatment?

BOD is an essential metric in wastewater treatment processes to assess how effective the treatment process is. If BOD levels are too high they indicate insufficient treatment, and so adjustments or improvements in the treatment process must be made. On the other hand, if BOD levels are low, it signifies successful treatment that organic pollutants have been removed, preserving the water quality for safeguarding public health and maintaining environmental sustainability.

If a BOD test is taken in a clean and therefore non-polluted river, the BOD reading should be <1 PPM, while if the BOD is measured in sewage, then it typically reads greater than 200 PPM, often reaching up to 600 PPM. [source]

Industries that need to discharge wastewater into municipal sewers or waterways must follow strict regulations on the levels of BOD in the water to protect our environment and the people using the water. Before discharging wastewater, the solid materials (organic and inorganic materials) must be reduced by treatment otherwise the BOD will increase when being discharged.

How does ECOKlien tackle BOD balance?

ECOKlien provides healthcare facilities and the industry with advanced hybrid treatment systems that are tuned to follow all regulations. The system comes equipped with sensors to ensure seamless processing of biomedical effluents without any human interference. Not only are we meeting BOD standards, but also ensuring safe handling of toxic substances.

Know more about our systems.

When we talk about water quality, one term that frequently comes up is biological oxygen demand, often abbreviated as BOD.
